Munguia vs Kelly and More

Golden Boy’s Munguia Leads Busy Week

By Uppercut staff

Middleweight contender Jaime Munguia fights another UK fighter when he meets Jimmy “Kilrain” Kelly on Saturday at the Honda Center in Anaheim.

Mexico’s Munguia (39-0, 31 Kos) targets Kelly (26-2, 10 KOs) who fights out of Lancashire, England in this middleweight fight set for 12 rounds. It’s the sixth time the Tijuana fighter participates in a middleweight fight. DAZN will stream the Golden Boy Promotions card.

Munguia’s trainer Erik “El Terrible” Morales says he wants the former super welterweight world titlist to feel more comfortable fighting at the 160-pound limit. In his last fight at Honda Center he defeated Gabe Rosado in a firefight.

“The last fight [at the Honda Center] was very exciting, very electric, and this fight is going to be sensational,” said Fernando Beltran, of Zanfer Promotions that co-promotes with Golden Boy. “It will be a great party, a great fiesta for all the Mexican and Mexican-American boxing fans. I really believe it’s going to be a night to remember.”

Also, IBF minimumweight world titlist Yokasta Valle (24-2, 9 Kos) defends against Orange County’s Lorraine Villalobos (5-3) who has twice fought world title fights and poses a dangerous challenge if prepared.

Also on the fight card is Oscar Duarte (22-1-1, 17 Kos) who accepted a quick fight and will meet Mark Bernaldez (23-5) in a 10 round lightweight fight. Duarte formerly fought under the Golden Boy banner but lost a decision three years ago against a foe he was supposed to handle easily. Since that loss Duarte has wiped out seven consecutive opponents by knockout. Decisions are no longer acceptable to the fighter from Parral, Mexico.

Another fighter to watch is welterweight southpaw prospect Evan Sanchez (11-0, 6 Kos) who meets knockout specialist Carlos Ortiz (12-5, 12 Kos) in an eight-round bout. Lefty versus lefty means trouble. This could be interesting for Sanchez who is managed by Joel De La Hoya. Check this fight out for sure.

Top Rank

Big-hitter Edgar Berlanga (19-0, 16 Kos) fights very tough Roamer Angulo (27-2, 23 Kos) at the Hulu Theater Madison Square Garden on Saturday June 11. ESPN will show the Top Rank card.

Angulo was last seen battling David Benavidez who stopped him in the 10th round. Does Berlanga have that kind of talent?

This is a big test for Berlanga.
