Jesus Beltran and Other All Star Boxing Action

By Sophia Reyes

COMMERCE, Ca.-Big personalities and even bigger blows ruled the night at Ed Holmes’s All Star Boxing event “Battle of the Rising Stars”. Eight engaging bouts took place at The Commerce Casino in Commerce, CA on November 5th 2022. The up and coming boxers stewed behind the scenes while the crowd full of friends and family sat patiently for over an hour and a half past predicted show time, but it was well worth the wait.

Jesus Torres Beltran (6--2-1) vs. Michael Portales (1-0-1) MAIN EVENT

The main event of the evening resulted in a split decision draw for the super lightweights Michael “The Bull” Portales (1-0-1) and Jesus “El Jefecito” Beltran (6-2-1).

With an unceasing downpour of punches, Portales put the pressure on Beltran as soon as the first round bell rang. It was a middle of the ring fight that had Beltran covering up and countering with loud body shots. In the second round, Portales broke Beltran’s guard with uppercuts straight down the middle. By the third round, Beltran decided it was time to box smart. He began to literally roll with the punches using the momentum to counter, used his elbow to create space and leverage, and worked the classic jabs to keep his opponent at bay. Portales's rain of perpetual blows continued straight through the end of the final fourth round. The judges score cards read 39-37,39-37, 38-38.

NOTABLE BOUTS:

Sean Bates(2-0-1) Vs. David Angeles (1-3-1)

The most difficult fight to watch was the lightweight scuffle between a gifted but ultra flashy Sean “Bad Boy” Bates (2-0-1) and disciplined David Angeles (1-3-1). Right away in round one, Bates unloaded a showy forward leaping left hook, while Angeles stuck to classic combinations, but it was a slow start for “Bad Boy” as he enjoyed listening to the cheering crowd while moving stylishly around the ring. At the end of round one, he managed to display excellent technique and delivery with a power combo, but that was short lived. Angeles used his opponent’s grandiose personality to his advantage. In round two Bates spent most of his time winking at the crowd, while Angeles put in the work and boxed smart. Bates did throw a beautiful left uppercut hook combo, leaving the crowd wanting more. Round three showed a mostly tired Bates while Angeles went to town with bludgeoning body shots. In the final round, Bates showcased an impressively slick pivot into an uppercut counter and Angeles landed a considerable amount of hurtful blows. Unfortunately, neither fighter walked away with a W. Angeles comments, “I was applying pressure and my coaches had me work hard in prep for the fight. I feel like I won that one.”

Armand Manuelian (6-0) vs Cristian Dominguez (11-5) Super lightweight

A notable highlight of the evening was Armand “Milli” Manuelian’s (6-0) unanimous decision victory over Cristian Dominguez (11-5) in a show stopping super lightweight performance. Milli sported a confident low guard paired with extremely specific and helpful direction from his corner. Dominguez landed long range combos, while Milli delivered short, sharp punches. Milli shined in rounds three and four landing powerful jabs, digging uppercuts, and blunt crosses. The roar of the crowd and the adrenaline of the fight seemed to over stimulate him as he began to aggressively shout in his opponent’s face. In round five, Dominguez landed a mean cross. Soon after it was inside game against the ropes with each fighter landing level changing punches. Round six left both fighters exhausted but managed to each sneak in one hard cross right before the last bell.

Ricardo Ruvalcaba vs. Ryan Venable

In his USA debut, the dynamic Ricardo Ruvalcaba (6-0-1) put on a stellar performance against a rebellious Ryan Venable (3-15) and won by KO 1:11 seconds in the 3rd round. Ruvalcaba checked all the boxes when it came to skill, power and even image. Ruvalcaba’s fight stance shaked with intensity, exploding with stinging blows especially a debilitating left hook to the body which he threw over and over again throughout the fight. Venable was knocked down once in the 2nd round, and twice in the 3rd with one being a KO for the win. “It felt good getting the KO surrounded by my friends and family in my US debut” he commented.

OTHER BOUTS

Davaadalai Altangerel (0-2-1) Vs. Antonio Lemus (0-1-1) featherweight

The four round featherweight battle of Antonio Lemus (0-1-1) vs. Davaadalai Altangerel (0-2-1) resulted in a split decision draw. One of the first highlights of the evening was seeing notable female coach Kamille “Coach Kam” Manalo as a corner person for Altangerel. After the last bell rang, the judges' score cards read 37-39, 38-38, and 39-37.

Hector Perez vs Genesis Wynn

Wild Card Boxing’s Hector Perez (1-1-1) took home the win against Genesis Wynn (1-3) in the four round welterweight division bout. Perez put the pressure on right away, knocking down Wynn in the first round. Wynn looked more surprised than hurt. The majority of the fight from start to finish was as a constant pattern of Wynn absorbing Perez’s flurries, throwing one counter, then finally pivoting out.

Dustin Gonzalez ( -) vs. Daniel Jefferson (-)

In the most problematic match up of the evening Daniel Jefferson (3-3) won by unanimous decision against Wild Card Boxing’s undefeated Dustin Gonzalez (3-1). Jefferson had a huge height advantage, reach advantage and on top of that he is a southpaw. It was apparent that this was a last minute fight for Gonzalez who displayed skill but no real plan. Unfortunately, the last two rounds of the fight consisted of Jefferson shoving and pinning Gonzalez against the ropes.

Arman Darchinyan(2-0-1) vs, Timothy Parks

Wild Card Boxing’s Arman Darchinyan(2-0-1) went toe to toe with Timothy Parks (3-3-1) which ended in a split decision draw. In all four rounds, Darchinyan displayed fast recoiling clean punches, while Parks excelled in bobbing and weaving. Darchinyan used downward jabs to make Parks stay down during his bobbing and weaving. In the final round, both fighters went all out using maximum punches backed by maximum effort.
