GGG and Lemieux “There will be blood”
By Igor Frank
Storied middleweight division has produced a number of memorable fights for boxing fans. Who could ever forget three rounds of fury between” Marvelous” Marvin Hagler and Thomas “Motor City Cobra” Hearns? Or how about Hagler stopping John Mugabi in the 11th round in the very next fight?
Boxing folks are still debating who won Hagler vs. Leonard, a middleweight battle that took place almost thirty years ago. Another middleweight scrap that is firmly etched in my memory banks is Roberto Duran edging Iran Barkley in a vicious war at Atlantic City.
Speaking about Atlantic City, I was ringside in 2008 at Boardwalk Hall when professor of sweet science, Bernard Hopkins gave undefeated, Kelly Pavlik one of the most amazing boxing lessons I have ever seen.
Kelly Pavlik, who only a year earlier came from behind to stop Jermain Taylor in a dramatic fashion and who was never the same after he went to school at the B- Hop academy. Speaking about B-Hop; his two brutal middleweight defenses against Antwun Echols as well as his massacre of Tito Trinidad are forever marked in my brain.
Boxing fans rejoice… and brace yourselves for yet another one!
“Welcome to Madison Square Garden, October 17th,” said IBO and WBO middleweight champion, Gennady Golovkin during Tuesday’s press conference in New York City that announced his unification bout with fellow power puncher and IBO middleweight champion from Canada, David Lemieux:” I promise an amazing show.”
Lemieux promised even more. He guaranteed:” There will be blood, yes!” Blood is what boxing fans crave when they go to see a fight.
“Finally,” exclaimed Tom Loeffler, Golovkin’s promoter:” A champion is fighting GGG.” Two champions with major fire power in their fists will square off to write the next chapter in middleweight boxing history.
Lemieux’s promoter, Bernard Hopkins who still holds the record of 20 consecutive middleweight title defenses, echoed this sentiment. “These fighters are getting ready to start their own legacy in the middleweight division,” said Hopkins who was excited about history being written at the Madison Square Garden:” And what better place than The Mecca of Boxing. I left my DNA here in this building defending the middleweight title and on October 17th these two fighters will do the same to prove to the world they are the unified middleweight champion.”
“This is the kind of fight the fight fans have been asking for,” said Golovkin’s head trainer Abel Sanchez. Fans have responded by buying 15 thousand tickets during first week of pre- sale.
“I am extremely proud to be here,” said Lemieux (34-2,31KO’S):” This event is already historical breaking MSG's record for most tickets sold for a boxing event during a pre-sale. “
“The fans will win on October 17th,” concluded WBC’s Jill Diamond. Don’t miss it and if you can’t get a ticket to go to the fight, please watch it on live telecast on HBO’s Pay Per View.
