Two rival Southern Californian featherweight champions, Leo Santa Cruz and Abner Mares are coming back to the ring for a rematch that will take place June 9TH at the Staples Center.

With both fighters coming off wins since their first bout against each other in the summer of August 2015, we should experience an exciting difference in what both fighters will bring to the table that night.

Santa Cruz (34-1-1, 19 KOs), won the majority decision over Mares (32-2-1, 15 KOs) in their first match up, asked what the difference in his training for this fight than his last, Leo states, “In this camp, I feel a lot stronger, lighter, more conditioning, everything is better. And my dad has been telling me that I look a lot better.”

For the last two and a half years, Abner Mares has been training with boxing trainer, Robert Garcia. He has plans to beat Santa Cruz in their rematch, “with intelligence and by listening to my corner”. Mares is very confident in the adjustments he has made in his boxing and training that he will overcome Santa Cruz with the win.

When asked of any concerns about Mares now training with Robert Garcia, given the fact that Santa Cruz was formerly trained by him in past fights, Santa Cruz responded, “Mares and me are the only ones going to be in the ring, so I don’t think Robert Garcia is going to be able to help him”.

“Robert Garcia is a great trainer and everything, but I don’t think there’s going to much of a difference”. Leo Santa Cruz does give Robert Garcia credit working with Abner Mares since their first bout together, he states “he has made Mares a better fighter and smarter; but we do the same”.

With high expectations and anticipation of the rematch fight, we’re definitely looking forward to Leo Santa Cruz’ and Abner Mares second battle to go to war toe-to-toe, “you guys won’t be disappointed” smirks Santa Cruz.
