Vic "The Raging Bull" Rolls Over Yonnhy Perez
By Wendy Rodriguez
LOS ANGELES-Vic Darchinyan (36-3-1 28 KO’s) of Armenia
became the new IBO Bantamweight champion after an accidental head butt against
Yonnhy Perez (20-2-1 14 KO’s) of Cartagena,
Colombia.
Darchinyan got to work early and quickly took Perez to the
corner. He let go fast and powerful combinations. Darchinyan dropped Perez in
the second round. He continued to throw on top and occasionally went to the
body as Perez covered up. Perez threw
his combinations but did not seem to hurt Darchinyan. Darchinyan continued to
jab towards his forearms and didn’t allow Perez to work. Perez did not fight
his fight.
Darchinyan continued to come forward and landed overhand
lefts and dominated Perez. As he bobbed
and weaved there was an accidental head but that cut Perez. Blood gushed out of
Perez eye brow. The doctor stepped in to examine Perez and decided he could not
continue. He stopped the fight at 1:07 of the fifth round. They went to the score
cards and all three judges scored the fight 50-44 declaring Darchinyan winner
by way of technical knockout.
In the junior lightweight division and one of the most
exciting fights of the night, Juan Reyes of Riverside
defeated Azat Hovhannesyan of Glendale, who was making
his pro debut. Reyes went to work quick as he came forward and threw hard
punches as if looking to finish Hovhannesyan early. Hovhannesyan hit and moved but Reyes was
landing the better punches and not allowing Hovhannesyan to throw. Hovhannesyan
had a few seconds and began to throw and land good combinations. The crowd
began to chant “Azat! Azat!” Reyes quickly turned it around and began to work
Hovhannesyan on the ropes. Reyes continued to attack and caught Hovhannesyan
with an over hand right that stunned him. Azat covered up and allowed Reyes to
get the best of him. Hovhannesyan stood his ground as he took many shots and
was finally saved by the bell. In the fourth and final round Hovhannesyan came
out throwing and connecting with his combinations. He knew he needed a knockout
to win the fight and he almost had it as he hurt Reyes and almost dropped him.
Reyes stumbled but quickly recovered. Two judges scored the fight 40-36 and the
other 38-37 declaring Reyes winner by unanimous decision.
In the junior welterweight division Omar Figueroa (11-0-1
9KO’s) of Texas stopped John Figueroa (7-10-3
3 KO’s) of Puerto Rico. It was a slow start as
both fighters felt each other out. Omar Figueroa quickly became comfortable and
began to throw more combinations. He threw a right uppercut that stumbled John
followed by a straight cross that dropped him. The referee counted eight and
the bell rang. The next round, Omar came
in throwing combinations as a southpaw and continued to land. John Figueroa’s
corner stood up and waved for the fight to be stopped to prevent their fighter
from more punishment. The fight was stopped at 2:05 of the second round
declaring Omar Figueroa the winner.
In the first junior welterweight division Art Hovhannesyan
(13-0-1 7KO’s) of Glendale, added another knockout to his record as he
defeated Jose Alfredo Lugo (11-16-1 5 KO’s) of Richmond, CA
with a fifth round KO. Hovhannesyan started throwing hard jabs. He waited for Lugo to throw so he could
counter punch. Hovhannesyan’s left hand did most of the work as he moved with
his hands low and jabs and left hooks and left uppercuts were being thrown
after every move he made. Lugo
threw punches but they had no effect on Hovhannesyan. Havhannesyan continued to connect and landed
a solid right cross that rocked Lugo.
He followed it by a push and sent Lugo
down. The referee began counting and decided to stop the fight at 1:57 of the
fifth round.
In the flyweight division Miguel Diaz (5-0 3 KO’s) of Allentown, Pa. won a
unanimous decision against Alejandro Solorio (4-4 3 KO’s) of Los Angeles. Solorio started connecting to
the body early. He threw good combinations and was landing them. Diaz fought
back and threw an over hand right that sent Solorio down. All judges scored the
fight 39-36 for Diaz.
In the junior middleweight division Vardan Gasparyan (13-2-5
7 KO’s) of Glendale CA defeated Trenton Titsworth (3-12-1 2KO’s)
of Omaha NE. Gasparyan caught Titsworth with an overhand right and dropped him.
The fight ended at 2:31 of the fifth round.
In the heavyweight division and first fight of the night,
DaVarryl Williamson (27-6 23 KO’s) of Washington
DC, defeated Michael Marrone (19-3 14 KO’s) of
Vero Beach, FL with a KO victory. Williamson dropped
Marrone in the third round and was given an eight count. After the drop,
Williamson came forward and tried to finish Marrone, but Marrone fought back
and rocked Williamson. He stumbled but kept on fighting and hurt Marrone and
continued to land. The referee stepped in at 2:30 of the 6th round.
